What is a Content Management System?

A Content Management System (often called a CMS) is a tool that lets you manage your own website: make changes whenever and however you want without having to pay for additional services from your web developer.
CMS tools come in a range of flavours, but most are based on a What You See is What You Get (WYSIWYG) system that allows you to add and change pages on your site without knowing how to code.  You simply go to the page you want to change and add or edit the text and images just as you would in Word or Excel.

Which CMS should you choose?

Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla, Sharepoint, Blogger, Movable Type, Typo3, and all of the custom-built tools that have been created by over-enthusiastic development teams. There are literally hundreds of different CMS tools to choose from.  We'll help you choose the right CMS for your needs, although we're especially enthusiastic about Drupal CMS since it so often seems to fit the bill:

  • With its built-in features, does it do what you need?
  • How simple is it to use?
  • If you need to make changes, can you? And how easily?
  • What support is available?
  • How much does it cost to buy, and to run?
